Hei Yang Mei’s Japanese-style handmade rolled sugar cones are hidden inside a rather unassuming shop in Banqiao’s residential area, but during the holidays, many of the locals come to this well-known spot to buy gifts for family and friends. The shop is run by a mother and son, Wang Mei-li and Lin Bing-xi. The iconic rotating Kyushu iron griddles in front of the shop have been operating for over 80 years. Simple rolled sugar cones are hand-made with basic ingredients such as eggs, milk powder, flour, sugar, salt and vegetable oil. The operator pays close attention to the weather conditions each season, adjusting the heat accordingly to ensure the biscuits are consistently of optimal quality. They’re proud to offer a variety of flavors including coffee, sesame, seaweed, matcha, and chocolate. Check out what happens when our host tries to make a few for herself. Hungry for more?
