Discover two perfect day hikes, a stone’s throw from Taipei, and experience the unique geography of Taiwan’s north coast. Take a journey through Taiwan’s geological history in this episode of City Escape. Andre starts today’s journey at Linshanbi, a cape in Shimen District, New Taipei City. This hike along the coastline offers breathtaking views, along with an abundance of flora and fauna. The highlight of this trail is Taiwan’s territorial basepoint, which can only be reached safely during low tide, so remember to check the tide times before venturing out! Next to the basepoint is a well-preserved fishing weir, and carrying on you can experience Taiwan’s special ventifact geology and algal reefs. Andre then arrives at Baisha Beach, a casualty of the global overuse of plastics. This beach has an unusual feature in its black sand, which is not a result of pollution but the erosion of andesite rocks. Andre then hikes the Mysterious Lake Trail and enjoys a more tranquil atmosphere at the end of the hike. To get to Linshanbi, take the Red Line MRT to Tamsui Station, then transfer to a bus to the North Coast Scenic Area Management Office stop. Next up is Camel Peak and Yehliu Geopark in Wanli District, New Taipei City. From Guihou Fishing Port, Andre hikes the beautiful Venus Coast Road, stops at the Sunrise Pavilion and then continues to Camel Peak. Although less of a peak and more of a small hill, Camel Peak is a unique rocky formation at 50 meters above sea level with spectacular views. From here, Andre makes the short walk over to Yehliu Geopark to check out Taiwan’s special geographical features. Walking through the geopark, Andre takes a quieter route to the Yehliu Light Beacon and an observation deck at the end of the trail. As Andre reflects on this trail he shares his thoughts and enjoys the ocean view.
