Take a trip through Taiwan’s gold mining history on this hike to Teapot Mountain and Qilian Ridge Trail in Ruifang District, New Taipei City. Find a daring summit and a ridge hike with stunning views in this former gold mining area on City Escape. Our guide Andre explores the mountains and unique geography of Jinguashi in Ruifang District at the northern tip of Taiwan. Jinguashi was the largest gold reserve in Taiwan and was heavily developed during the Japanese colonial period. Now, it is an area abundant in nature, trails and historical features from its mining past. In this episode, Andre hikes Teapot Mountain (602 m) with a challenging climb to conquer leading to a dramatic ridge hike. Qilian Ridge Trail leads to Banping Mountain (705 m). On the way back to Jinguashi Andre visits the Golden Shrine, a Shinto shrine built by the Japanese. This is a challenging hike so be prepared for climbing and ridge hiking. Bring plenty of food and water, as well as rain and sun protection depending on the weather. Jinguashi is reached by taking a train to Ruifang station and then a bus to Jinguashi.
