New Taipei City, Taiwan is full of excellent hiking trails that are perfect for a quick escape from the bustle of the city. Discover two great options with Andre in this episode of City Escape! Andre is checking out two hikes in New Taipei City. The first is in Tucheng on the blue line of the MRT. The Tung Blossom Trail is a hidden gem in Tucheng and this route also includes one of Taiwan’s "small 100 peaks" (小百岳). This route is great to enjoy year-round, but if you want to enjoy the gorgeous Tung Blossoms, April-May is the time to see the flowers in full bloom. Andre takes the firefly viewing trail to Tung Blossom Park, then heads to Tianshang Mountain (430 m). This trail is challenging enough, so remember to bring enough water and food for around 2-3 hours of hiking. Getting to the Tung Blossom Trail is easy, simply take the blue line MRT towards Dingpu and get off at Yongning station. From there you can take the bus to Nantianmu Square station. The second trail is just a stone’s throw from Xindian MRT station. Discover a fun start to the trail as Andre takes the gondola across the river and explores Hemei Mountain. This trail is abundant in wildlife and history as it was home to an amusement park! Although the amusement park is long gone, there are still great views and plenty of nature to enjoy. During firefly season (April-May), this route is best in the late afternoon to early evening as it is an excellent spot for viewing fireflies. This is a well-marked and well-built trail so it’s suitable for all levels and there are plenty of places to get food and water around Xindian MRT station.
