Exploring Peaks in Pingxi, New Taipei City, Taiwan - City Escape Ep1
Pingxi, Taiwan is a former mining town nestled in the mountains north of Taipei. Surrounded by stunning landscapes that are home to numerous trails, it’s the perfect place to take a refreshing hike, escape the bustle of the city and experience some beautiful views. Meet our thrill-seeking host Andre Carrillo as he explores the mountains around Pingxi. The quest today is a challenging hike to Xiaozi Mountain (360 m), Cimu Peak (410 m) and Putuo Mountain (450 m). All three are nestled in the same area with an easy and accessible trail to get to all three. First on the list is Xiaozi Mountain. Known for stunning panoramic views and the epic climb to get there, Xiaozi Mountain is still achievable for adventure seekers of all levels. The trailhead is just a short walk from Pingxi train station. Then the hike begins in earnest to the saddle where the three trails branch off. Join Andre as he takes in the beautiful sights and sounds of Taiwan’s nature along the trail. Next, experience the thrill of the climb to the summit of Xiaozi Mountain as Andre tackles the heart-racing journey to the peak. After the thrilling climb of Xiaozi Mountain, Andre is taking on the more straightforward climbs of Cimu Peak and Putuo Mountain. All three trails require a return to the saddle to get to the next route. From the saddle, there is a straight climb up to Cimu Peak which gives a great view of Xiaozi Mountain. Then, onto Putuo Mountain, a beautiful ridge hike with a nice shaded trail to the summit which offers panoramic mountain views. The adventure ends with a little exploration of Pingxi Old Street which is laid-back and full of charm and some delicious street food as a reward! Join Andre next time as he explores more of Taiwan’s natural beauty on City Escape. Key info: Travel: Taipei to Pingxi, easiest access is the train to Pingxi from Taipei Main Station. Hike Level: Challenging (if attempting all three peaks in one trip). Gear: A small backpack, as some areas on the trail are narrow, 1-2 liters of water, snacks, and a walking stick is also useful (though not crucial).
