Reviving the Majestic Double Bass with Taiwan Top Contrabasses Ensemble Ep2
The double bass—also known as the contrabass—is an instrument often associated with being the “soul of music” (as in jazz trios) or an inextricable member of a classical music ensemble. But today, we’re bringing you a whole new experience with an ensemble that only consists of the double bass. From Pirates of the Caribbean to the Can-can, this Taiwanese musical act is here to make this resonant instrument sound fresh. The Taiwan Top Contrabasses Ensemble is not only the first, professional all-contrabass ensemble in Taiwan, they are also a relatively new group. Formed in 2021 by “the godfather of the double bass” in Taiwan—Chen Wei-che—this musical group aims to explore and expand the possibilities of this musical instrument that often goes unnoticed sonically in an orchestra setting. ‘Resound’ is a TaiwanPlus original series that hopes to present Taiwan’s varied musical landscape. Not only are there a wide array of musical genres that are being professionally performed here, but the kinds of musical groups performing them are just as diverse. From classical musicians to contemporary artists that exhibit their talent in both musicianship and songwriting, to jazz bands and acapella groups who tell tales unique to Taiwan. We believe that good music is worth resounding over and over again.
