From classical musicians to contemporary artists that exhibit their talent in both musicianship and songwriting, to jazz bands and acapella groups who tell tales unique to Taiwan. We believe that good music is worth resounding over and over again.
Acapella music has been around for more than 500 years, and yet it’s only gotten more popular in recent years. From groups like Pentatonix to VoicePlay and Filharmonic, acapella music groups can vary in genre, cultural influences, and performance styles.
Taiwanese acapella group Voco Novo is a sextet formed in 2009. Over the years, they’ve built a name for themselves across various competitions like winning the Gold Diploma at the 2012 vokal.total International A Cappella Competition in Austria, then being awarded “Best Asian Album” and “Best World Music Song” at the 2013 CARA, and then receiving 2nd place at the 2015 Tampere Music Festival competition.
Like many musical groups in other episodes of this season of Resound, Voco Novo utilizes their multi-cultural background to make Taiwan sound different. They hope to make music visible and have the World hear the diverse array of voices coming from this island. From Indigenous folk tunes to singing in the Minnan dialect, and from a rendition of a poem by Song dynasty poet Xin Qiji to a song about the joys of traveling alone: Voco Novo sure knows how to paint images with their vocals.
