The National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan (a.k.a. Taiwan Philharmonic) is well-known amongst classical lovers. Lesser known is the Taiwanese Chamber Orchestra. Led by concermaster Dr. Chu Yu-yu, the group utilizes the universal language of classical music to speak the various local cultures of Taiwan, as well as of the native Austronesian culture. Take the famous Taiwanese folk tune “The Sky is Dark” (天黑黑), in which the rendition performed here provides a classic example of “old meets new.” “Chamber orchestra” means “exquisite small orchestra” and is often an indicator of the culture of a certain location or community. Having one like the Taiwanese Chamber Orchestra, therefore, highlights the classical music stronghold that this island nation is. Indeed, this chamber orchestra proves that Taiwan is no short of talents in the classical music field. Hear it for yourselves, a genre blending of classical music, Taiwanese folk culture and the prowess of Taiwan’s best classical musicians.
