Many would probably think of the saxophone when talking about jazz music, but seldom do we think of Asian jazz musicians or saxophonists from Taiwan. this island nation has birthed a plethora of jazz saxophone players—including the TSJO Saxophone Jazz Quartet. Led by prominent Taiwanese musician Shawna Yang, this quartet uses a simple set-up of four different types of saxophones to create dynamic melodies and paint vivid images. Like many of our other musicians featured in this series, the TSJO Sax Quartet utilizes a universal language of Western musical instruments (in this case, the alluring timbre of the saxophone) to tell tales of a uniquely Taiwanese experience. From a mix of musical genres between Taiwan and maestro George Gershwin of the U.S., to a hauntingly beautiful piece that depicts Taiwan’s natural beauty, Shawna Yang and her group of four saxophonists are here to remind you why we love jazz music.
