Huang Hsin-chien loves virtual reality, augmented reality, and other technological mediums. The digital artist lost sight in his right eye at the age of four. That is, until age 14, when a cornea donor from Sri Lanka helped to restore his vision and reminded him that “seeing” in three dimension is a wonderful experience. After graduating from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University, Huang chose to continue his studies in the United States. Getting lost in technology while living in another country provided a unique opportunity to reconsider his own culture. +Storynest Narrative Lab was established upon his return to Taiwan to experiment with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology. Art Echo follows as Narrative Lab presents “Bodyless”, an immersive virtual reality experience using technology to immortalize his father’s memories and experiences as a political prisoner under Martial Law. We’ll explore how Huang Hsin-chien and his interdisciplinary creative team apply technology on site to draw audiences into his futuristic sci-fi fantasy.
