“The victims of the White Terror in Taiwan were almost never questioned, discussed, mentioned or spoken about. Then, suddenly, these actors on stage perform everything you’ve ever wondered about,” says Dr. Cheng Yu-shu, great-niece of victim, Cheng Wen-feng. Against Again Theatre’s “Clear White Song” received the Annual Grand Prize at the 18th Taishin Arts Awards. This artful blend of storytelling, folk songs, and reportage theatre is dedicated to the victims of the White Terror Period. In February of 2023, “Clear White Song” returned to Puzi, Chiayi, the area hardest hit by these events. In the 1950s, many young intellectuals who returned to the village were often detained or shot on suspicion of joining underground leftist movements in support of freedom and democracy. Chen Wen-feng was one such young man, charged with “attempting to overthrow the government.” He was sentenced to death and died at just 21 years of age. For years, the Cheng family has refused to even utter the word “Communist”. Now, they are breaking their silence. Art Echo follows as Against Again performs for the families of Puzi. Theatre bears witness to their tragedy and honors enduring memories of the victims.
