Indie musicians TUDI-VOICE have been a fixture in Taiwan’s music scene since 2007. Their unique brand of Taiwanese folk rock speaks to greater concern for rural Taiwan, disadvantaged communities, and sustainable land development. “My music is a giant f-bomb, and my guitar is my gun,” says A-ta, lead singer and guitarist. In the early years, the band spent almost a decade hauling their guitars, drums, and keyboard to any major protest at Ketagalan Boulevard, the environmental ministry, the Executive Cabinet, Lo-Sheng Sanatorium, Sanying Village or Chang’s Pharmacy in Dapu, Miaoli. Music became an outlet to express their outrage against injustice and to speak up for disadvantaged communities at the lowest levels of Taiwanese society. Upon returning to Changhua in 2014, the process of settling down and adjusting to life in his hometown led A-ta to consider a major shift for TUDI-VOICE in terms of both style and composition. A new album “KIN” was soon nominated for Best Taiwanese Album at the 29th Golden Melody Awards. “Hõo Lí ê Kua” (Songs for You) followed in 2023 as the front man turned forty and reflected on his love for fatherhood, family, and the farm. This story of TUDI-VOICE follows lead singer A-ta and cellist Li-chun through their day to day in Ershui, Changhua as they prepare for the 2023 ArtQuake in Autumn Festival.
