Taiwan Connection Performs Classical Music Without a Conductor - Art Echo Ep5
Hu Nai-yuan is a Taiwanese concert violinist with an accomplished career as both a soloist and chamber performer. He established the Taiwan Connection (TC) orchestra featuring leading musicians from Taiwan and abroad who are known for performing Classical pieces without a conductor. This democratic approach allows for more spontaneity and intuitive musicality than traditional ensembles. Rehearsals feel like open discussions that seek to dissolve authority in the musical world. Hu’s career began with violin lessons at an early age. He went on to win the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 1985 before continuing his studies in the United States and around the world. By the early nineties, the lifting of martial law provided new opportunities to return to Taiwan and make peace with the legacy of the White Terror period. The Wild Lily veteran says classical pieces like Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 invite reflections on the continued cost of authoritarianism and freedom far beyond the 20th century.
