Dancing Outside the Box - Art Echo Ep4
Taiwanese dancer and choreographer Ho Hsiao-mei is known for her rich interpretation of contemporary issues and surreal imagery. She’s also a recipient of the National Award for the Arts. As a rather shy and introverted child, she wasn’t always comfortable around others. Discovering dance gave her the chance to explore different versions of herself. Art Echo follows while Meimage Dance prepares to present their 2018 production “New Paradise of Silent Island” largely inspired by temple culture and subconscious expectations for women in Taiwanese society. Ho attempts to challenge traditional conceptions of women in the eyes of a patriarchal society and to capture the full breadth of her emotions. VR elements are a unique aspect of the choreography that eliminates distance by bringing the audience into the performance space and allowing them to look around freely. This new take on immersive theatre hopes to foster greater connection and understanding.
