KMT Rallies Around Local Candidates, Vows To Become 'TSMC of Politics'
Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang has launched its annual national congress with an eye on November's local elections. Party Chair Cheng Li-wun opened the event with a dragon boat-themed ceremony, urging candidates to "row together towards victory." Cheng also invoked the party's history by reading Sun Yat-sen's final testament and credited the KMT with helping establish semiconductor giant TSMC during its years in power. She said the party should become the "TSMC of politics" by safeguarding Taiwan's democracy, freedom, rule of law and prosperity as it seeks to regain political momentum ahead of the elections.

Party Chair Cheng Li-wun beat a drum at the helm of a dragon boat as the KMT candidates for the November elections hoisted oars, under the theme of "rowing together towards victory." Cheng also read the final state testament of Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the party and the Republic of China – Taiwan's official name – in a nod to the party's legacy. She also credited the party for being in power when semiconductor giant TSMC was founded during the KMT's authoritarian era, and said that the party should become the TSMC of politics, to protect Taiwan's democracy.

Like TSMC, the KMT in Taiwan must safeguard Taiwan's democracy, freedom, rule of law and prosperity. The KMT must become the TSMC of politics because this is the only way we can protect Taiwan. And we can share Taiwan's democracy and freedom with the world and benefit humanity.
The party is planning to stage a major protest outside the Presidential Office Saturday evening against the government’s handling of a recent food safety scandal.
The local elections are a precursor to the 2028 presidential election.
