Taiwan Calls for Peaceful Resolution of South China Sea Disputes
Taiwan is reaffirming its long-standing approach to the South China Sea, calling for disputes to be resolved peacefully and warning against the use of force to assert territorial claims.

Taiwan's foreign ministry says it seeks peaceful solutions to disputes in the South China Sea and condemns hostile actions by China.
Lin Chia-lung (TAIWAN FOREIGN MINISTER):
We hope to actively promote peaceful resolution of disputes and that in areas including maritime scientific research disputes can be set aside and joint development can be pursued through peaceful means. We also oppose any international negotiations or consultations that take place without Taiwan’s participation.

Foreign minister Lin Chia-lung spoke before delivering a report on South China Sea policy to lawmakers on Wednesday morning. The ministry said Taiwan would continue to follow its four principles: these are the peaceful resolution of claims; inclusion in negotiations; regional freedom of navigation, and willingness to shelve disputes. It warned that China's use of force to assert its claims undermines regional peace.

The ministry said Taiwan would continue to follow its four principles: peaceful resolution to competing claims, Taiwan's inclusion in any negotiations, relevant countries upholding freedom of navigation in the area, and willingness to shelve disputes to focus on joint development. It warned that China's unilateral actions in the area, such as militarizing its claims, undermine regional peace.
