Lee Kang-sheng’s career in film began with his appearance in “Rebels of the Neon God” directed by Tsai Ming-liang in 1992, and since then, Lee has become the soul of Tsai’s films. From “Vive l'amour,” “The River,” “What Time Is It There?,” “Visage,” and “Days to Abiding Nowhere,” Lee’s minimalist acting and restrained emotions shaped many memorable characters. His collaboration with Tsai has conquered the international film community as their works are repeatedly selected for the three most prestigious film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, and these films are regarded as the symbol of Taiwan cinema. In 2013, Lee played a marginalized character who struggled to make ends meet in “Stray Dogs,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice. Lee’s performance in the film earned him Best Leading Actor at the Golden Horse Awards, Asia Pacific Film Festival, and Taipei Film Awards. In recent years, Lee began working with different directors and took part in “The Rope Curse 2,” “Fantasy World,” and “Stranger Eyes.” Apart from acting, Lee directed his first feature, “The Missing,” which won the Tiger Award at the 33rd International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2007, Lee wrote, directed, and acted in “Help Me Eros,” which was in competition at the 64th Venice Film Festival. Since 2014, Lee has toured around the world with the play, “The Monk from Tang Dynasty,” directed by Tsai Ming-liang. With merely his eyes and body, Lee conveys all kinds of experiences one has gone through in life, proving himself to be one of the most important figures in Taiwanese arts and cinema.
