Every year in Yeliu on the northern coast of Taiwan, fishers pray for the safety and prosperity of the village through Harbor Purification Festival, where participants walk through water and fire. The congregation would carry local deities on sedan chairs and parade the village, bestowing blessings to households by lighting up firecrackers. Sedan chair carriers would jump into the harbor and walk through burning charcoal and joss paper so as to show their reverence to the gods. Learn more about the history of this sacred tradition.
