Taiwan’s baseball team defeated China 5-1 on Sunday to win bronze at the Asian Games but debate continued over an incident from the semifinal meeting between the two teams two days earlier. Stadium staff asked a supporter to put away a towel bearing the word “Taiwan,” prompting criticism from fans and officials. Unlike tournaments such as the World Baseball Classic, the Asian Games follow Olympic rules under which Taiwan competes as “Chinese Taipei.” Organizers also barred Taiwan’s national flag and Japan’s Rising Sun flag, saying they violated restrictions on political advocacy.
