Lawmakers in Taiwan have passed a legislative amendment making drug-impaired driving a distinct offense from drunk driving, establishing stiffer penalties for motorists using illegal substances like cannabis. Under the new law, baseline offenses for driving under the influence of illegal drugs would carry mandatory prison terms ranging from six months to five years. Repeat offenders who cause a fatal crash within a 10-year period could face the death penalty and fines reaching up to US$300,000.
