New Taipei prosecutors have indicted five people for allegedly assaulting Taiwanese comedian Huang Yi-hao, supposedly on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party. Prosecutors said the group targeted Huang after he performed a satirical routine about Chinese President Xi Jinping. Investigators allege Chinese operatives offered the suspects about US$13,000 to stage a car crash and carry out the assault. Authorities also linked the case to the vandalism of the venue where Huang performed in May. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council condemned the Chinese Communist Party’s alleged involvement in the incident.
