New Undersea Cable Connects Taiwan to Matsu

Taiwan has launched a fourth submarine cable connecting the main island with the outlying Matsu Islands, in a bid to improve connectivity and strengthen communications resilience. Communication links to Taiwan’s outlying islands have seen outages as cables have been damaged by weather, accidents or suspected sabotage.

The government has held a ceremony for a fourth submarine cable connecting Taiwan's main island to the outlying Matsu Islands.

Premier Cho Jung-tai was there, along with representatives from the local government, the digital affairs ministry and Chunghwa Telecom. The goal is to improve connectivity to the area and provide resilience. In recent years, communication links to Taiwan’s outlying islands have seen outages as cables have been damaged by weather, accidents or suspected acts of sabotage. The government says it expects to complete two more cables to the islands of Penghu and Kinmen by the end of the year.
