Chinese-Born Candidates’ Eligibility in Taiwan Elections Under Scrutiny

Taiwan’s 2026 local elections are drawing nearly 20,000 candidates vying for more than 11,000 seats. Among them are 26 Chinese citizens who settled in Taiwan through marriage. Some face questions over whether they can run for office and ultimately take their seats. Under Taiwan’s laws, Chinese citizens who meet residency requirements can run, but must provide proof they have given up Chinese citizenship before taking office. Election authorities are expected to determine candidates’ eligibility by mid-October.
