Taiwan has been ranked in the top tier of countries in the Atlantic Council's latest Freedom and Prosperity Index.

The Washington DC-based think tank uses different metrics to rank 171 countries. In this year’s report, Taiwan placed 21st in terms of freedom and 19th in terms of prosperity. Denmark scored highly, ranking first for freedom and second for prosperity, with Norway coming in on top. While Afghanistan ranked lowest for freedom, and the Central African Republic was ranked the least prosperous. The report says political freedom and rule of law declined in 2025, while economic freedom remained stable.

The Freedom and Prosperity Indexes are two separate indexes that rank 171 countries around the world according to their levels of freedom and prosperity. All index measurements are weighted equally and the score for each index is simply the average of its component parts. Scores range between zero and one hundred, with higher values indicating more freedom or prosperity. The indexes are constructed using publicly available datasets produced by other prominent organizations and international institutions.
