CZ Dogg is straight outta Chaozhou in southern Taiwan. A viral hit “$50 NTD Betel Nut” catapulted him to stardom and turned him into the youngest nominee in the history of the Golden Indie Music Awards. He has since been nominated for “Best New Artist” at the 34th Golden Melody Awards. Betel nut beauties are young women who sell betel nuts by the roadside wearing revealing clothing to attract customers. While neon-lit betel nut stands aren’t as popular as before, Baby Betel Nuts, and other upscale stores celebrate combining traditional stalls with modern pop culture. CZ Dogg adopts this imagery in his lyrics to protest stereotypes of Indigenous people. Take a look behind this seemingly overnight success at the young man from a local Paiwan village.
