Liè Ying Wants to be Taiwanese! - Taiwan Calling Ep3

Josh Bird used to be a Mormon missionary. White shirts, little black nametags, bicycle… the whole bit. Liè Ying was born from the call of rock and roll. It’s the music that tells you to be yourself. It’s the music that tells you to be free. Josh chose this artist name because ‘Liè Ying’ 「烈鷹」‘falcon’ sounds a lot cooler than ‘niǎo’ 「鳥」‘bird’ or the Taiwanese slang for lame. Liè Ying wrote a series of songs expressing love for his favorite island including viral hits like “Tsai Ying-wen” and “A-tɔk-a”, a song, literally meaning ‘foreigners’ of Western descent, that’s written from the perspective of someone who loves the American culture too much. While many Taiwanese would say, “I want to be just like you,” Josh cautions that it’s better to expand on the many good things that Taiwanese culture has to offer. The rock and roll singer is affectionately known as the shrimp killer. Fans often ask if he wants to go shrimp fishing at the local pools in Shilin. A live performance of his song “Hammer and Nail” is the perfect opportunity to make it happen. Let’s see what everyone thinks when he follows up with the heartfelt declaration: I want to be Taiwanese!
