A_Root: Gods, Monsters… and a Good Day in Yilan - Taiwan Calling Ep1

A_ROOT believes ghosts and monsters are a culture’s source of imagination. The 6-piece ensemble tells ghosts stories with a mixture of Taiwanese folk music and modern alternative rock. Singing about ghosts who may be fixated on something from their past provides an opportunity for them to move on and be reborn. A concept that inspires the band to challenge our fears when we talk about the spirits in Taiwan. “When a culture is constantly flowing, it won’t be stagnant” says sheng player and vocalist, Jipo Yang. As their name suggests, the band stays firmly rooted in Taiwanese culture while embracing an evolving sense of identity. The song “Taiwan Hard Clam” is about a report proving the species is native to Taiwan. What may have originated from Japan, Korea, or China has since adapted to a new environment. It sounds crazy but fans just might find themselves in a bowl of soup! A good day in Yilan is never complete without a visit to the Earth God, Tudingong. He’s very down to earth like your chill uncle who provides spiritual revelations grounded in everyday life. The band performed “Fu Fu” as part of a special dedication at the Sihjie Golden Tudigong Temple. A fitting tribute to the deity who is always there to listen to your troubles big or small.
