A Good Old Fashioned Jug Band in Taiwan! - Taiwan Calling Ep9
The Muddy Basin Ramblers are a Taipei jug band known for their blend of early 20th-century blues and jazz music, with a modern and international twist. They incorporate DIY instruments made of household items, such as washboards and wash basins, to create a unique vintage sound that’s been entertaining crowds at the iconic Bitan Scenic Area since 2003. The band name originated in Taipei because the city is surrounded by mountains on all sides. After a typhoon, this ragtag bunch of travelin’ ramblers decided to settle in the ‘muddy basin’ down there. The rest, as they say, is history. Now they’re five albums strong and enjoying a strong local following. “Ke Bu Ke Yi” is a favorite that explores the pain of international phone calls. We live in different places, we speak different languages, and, at times, your call just cannot be completed as dialed!
