The Hawk and the Knife: Ho Hwa-jen
In memory of the bird artist Ho Hwa-jen (1958-2021). Spring is a busy season for birds and birders alike. Eagles in the mountains and forests are busy searching for mates while birders are busy observing their movements. Many artists take inspiration from birds, but few focus solely on drawing and engraving birds for three decades like Ho Hwa-jen did. Today, his name is synonymous with woodcut bird prints. He and a group of birding friends established the Raptor Research Group of Taiwan to promote ecological conservation and research, and also worked on ecological documentaries to raise public awareness of raptors. At the same time he was fighting for endangered raptors to survive, he himself experienced a life-threatening illness. After a miraculous recovery, he continued to break new ground in his artistic creations.
