TSOU TRIBE BBQ & Indigenous Culture in Alishan, Taiwan! - Luke Martin
The Tsou are one of Taiwan’s 16 officially recognized tribes. Although the Tsou population is small (there are more monkeys in Taiwan), their pride is huge. The Tsou were warriors who once roamed the plains of western Taiwan fishing and hunting, not only for animals. The patriarchal society of the Tsou once practiced headhunting. This was banned long ago. Today we are seeing first hand this ancient culture by spending the day with a Tsou man who has created a profitable industry on his native lands. Mr. Feng, also known as The Prince of Coffee, has revolutionized a new industry in the tea-dominated hills of Alishan by growing high-quality Taiwanese coffee. His high-tech approach and engineering degree help to cultivate award-winning coffee. To have a better insight into Tsou culture, we take a visit to the YUYUPAS Cultural Centre before wrapping up our day by eating a Tsou-style BBQ with Mr. Feng.
