Drawing Formosa: People and Nature
Drawing Formosa begins 1,500 meters high in Taiwan’s lushest mountains, where Baali has worked for nearly 20 years as a porter. When his fellow hikers return home, Baali’s true work begins, painting mountain landscapes that few people have ever had access to. In his “studio” among the trees, he paints the breathtaking visions he sees, so that others can appreciate the beauty of Taiwan’s nature, and so he can leave a record for future generations. Underground, below the city of Taipei, former university professor Chen Kiun-tong rides the metros, where a constant stream of people provides new subjects to sketch each day. More importantly, it allows him to make human connections and pass on his aesthetics to others. With urgency, passion and a sketch pad, Professor Chen creates a vision of Formosa very different from Baali the porter, but both visions portray an island rich with beauty and serendipity. _ Director: LAI King-chung Producer: YIN Hao
