Report: Taiwan Arms Deal Could Jeopardize Trump-Xi Summit This Month

Chinese President Xi Jinping may refuse to meet with US President Donald Trump later this month if Washington approves any new arms sales to Taiwan, according to Kyodo News. The report comes as a record US$14 billion arms package for Taiwan remains under review in Washington. The US is Taiwan’s largest arms supplier, but Beijing has long opposed such sales. Taiwan’s foreign ministry says China frequently tries to obstruct Taiwan's normal engagement with other countries, adding that Taipei and Washington remain in close communication.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry says China has repeatedly tried to interfere with other countries’ normal engagement with Taiwan. It says Taiwan and the US remain in close communication.
