The US government is accusing top Chinese AI companies of maliciously copying technology from leading US AI models.

According to a Tuesday report, Washington warns that firms including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and Alibaba are using “distillation,” a technique that uses larger AI models to train smaller ones at lower cost, to copy capabilities from US AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google and improve their own systems, allegedly with Chinese government awareness.

This comes ahead of a meeting between the two countries’ leaders later this month and a separate AI safety meeting in mid-September.
