US Envoys Make First Visit to Ukraine Following Meeting With Putin

US President Donald Trump's peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have made their first ever visit to Ukraine following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Witkoff called their meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv "constructive and substantive" and said the US hopes to see a diplomatic solution to ending Russia's war with Ukraine, now in its fifth year.

US envoys have met with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv to talk about how to end the war with Russia.

This was the first time President Trump's peace negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Ukraine. It comes after they met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow Saturday. Witkoff said the talks with Zelenskyy were “constructive and substantive” and that the US hopes for a diplomatic solution to the war. Trump said Friday that the US might have a new peace proposal but did not go into detail.

US envoy Steve Witkoff said on Sunday, September 6, that he felt 'good' about peace talks in both Moscow and Kyiv, adding that the US hoped to find a diplomatic solution to the war, which is now in its fifth year.

Witkoff made the comments during a news conference held with fellow US envoy Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The US envoys were for the first time in Kyiv for talks with Zelenskyy as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue.

Kushner and Witkoff travelled from Moscow, where they held three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, September 5, but did not appear to secure a breakthrough in the conflict.

Previous rounds of US-mediated peace talks encouraged by President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a promise to quickly end the war, have yielded few results. He suggested on Friday, September 4, that the US had a fresh proposal, though he did not elaborate.
