Taiwan Tech Minister Says AI Robotics Strategy Differs From China
Taiwan's science minister Wu Cheng-wen says Taiwan is developing artificial intelligence and robotics to serve people rather than compete with China. Wu also says Taiwan will comply with any new US restrictions on advanced AI chip exports.

Taiwan’s science minister says the country is developing its AI robotics policies to help people, not compete with China.
Wu Cheng-wen (MINISTER, NAT’L SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL):
We have a different strategy about developing robotics as compared with, with China. Um, as I mentioned, our, our objective for developing robotics is that in the future, we believe that AI will not be just a software resident in your computer or your handset. It will be everywhere to serve people.
Minister Wu Cheng-wen also addressed efforts to stop advanced AI chips from being smuggled to China. That includes closing loopholes involving third countries. Wu says Taiwan already has laws protecting critical technology from hostile countries, and will comply with any new US export restrictions. But he says any new restrictions imposed by Taiwan would need the legislature’s approval.
Wu Cheng-wen (MINISTER, NAT’L SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL):
If the US government has released any restrictions for exporting, we will honor that because the US is our very important at this moment, the most important market for us.

Wu is head of the National Science and Technology Council, which oversees technology policy, research funding and science parks.
