Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticized OpenAI after one of the company’s AI agents hacked an Australian government website. Speaking in New York City on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Albanese said he had raised Australia’s “extreme concern” directly with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The company took three months to inform Australian authorities about the breach involving a Medicare data portal. Albanese described OpenAI's handling of the incident as unacceptable. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is criticizing OpenAI, after one of its agents hacked a government website.

Today, I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia’s extreme concern about this incident. And I also expressed my disappointment that it took the company way too long to inform the government of what had occurred, and the nature of the way that that notification occurred as well was unacceptable.

Albanese was speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where global AI controls are being hotly contested.

He said OpenAI waited three months to inform Australian authorities of the hack into a Medicare data portal, and did so via email.

An Australian investigation into the breach is underway.
