New rules will effectively penalize Taiwanese athletes who represent China's national teams in sporting events.

Tighter Rules for Taiwanese Athletes Competing for China

REPORTER:
Taiwan is tightening rules aimed at preventing Taiwanese athletes from competing for China.

The new guidelines, released by the sports ministry, do not explicitly ban Taiwanese athletes from representing China. But they prohibit them from joining any group in China that involves national identity or fundamental loyalty. Such cases have been rare. In 2024, a Taiwanese athlete competed for China at the world Kendo championships in Italy. The sports ministry says violators could face penalties under laws governing cross-strait relations.

The new revision to cross-strait sports exchange guidelines doesn’t outright ban the practice. But it uses language saying Taiwanese people may not join any group in China that involves “national identity or fundamental loyalty” to effectively penalize athletes who cross over. The sports ministry says the actual penalties will be based on the act that governs cross-strait people-to-people relations.
