Gwangju Biennale: China Pulls Out to Protest Taiwan Pavilion

China is pulling out of a contemporary art expo in South Korea to protest Taiwan’s naming at the event.
The Gwangju Biennale is set to begin on September 5 with exhibitions from around the world. Last month, Taiwan’s government lodged a protest with organizers when the name of the Taiwan Pavilion was unilaterally changed to the acronym for the ‘National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art.’ Organizers eventually allowed Taiwan to use its original name. The Chinese participants said that their departure is to protest a "incorrect designation." South Korea’s foreign ministry says the row is regrettable and that the naming was from a private sector event.

Last month, Taiwan’s government lodged a protest with organizers when it learned that the country’s name at the show was represented under the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art rather than the name ‘Taiwan.’ Organizers then agreed to allow Taiwan to appear at the show under the name ‘Taiwan Pavilion.’ The Chinese participants said that their departure is to protest a "incorrect designation."
