A team of 53 Taiwanese professionals is heading to Shanghai for the 48th WorldSkills Competition from September 22 to 27. Competing across 47 professional categories—including industrial machinery maintenance, aircraft engineering, healthcare and culinary arts—the delegation seeks to replicate Taiwan’s stellar performance from the previous competition in France. President Lai Ching-te offered his blessings, promising increased government investment in vocational education. Labor Minister Hung Sun-han added that channeling skilled young talent directly into local industries remains essential for long-term industrial sustainability.

President Lai Ching-te has wished Taiwan’s national team success ahead of a major vocational skill and trade competition in Shanghai.

Lai Ching-te (TAIWAN PRESIDENT):  
It doesn’t matter if it’s maintaining industrial machinery, aircraft and air conditioners, or baking, hairdressing and healthcare, each of these professions requires real skill. Society needs them all. These professionals are the backbone of our industries. That’s why we hope not only to join this competition but also to direct these talents to industries. That way, we can keep industrial development sustainable and further advance our skills.

2026 WorldSkills Competition

A national team of 53 industrial craftsmen is heading its way to Shanghai for the 48th WorldSkills Competition. President Lai Ching-te has given his blessings to the team.

Lai Ching-te (TAIWAN PRESIDENT):  
No matter if it’s maintenance for industrial machinery, aircraft, air conditioning units, baking, hairdressing, or health care, every profession requires real skills. Society needs them all. In the future, the government will continue to expand investments in vocational education, combining industry, academics, training, and employment.

REPORTER:  
The competition tests professional skills in major industrial sectors, such as electrical work, carpentry, software development, and fashion design. The team is signed up for 47 categories, after winning 43 medals in France. Labor minister Hong Shen-han says Taiwan’s participation in the international event would help encourage more people to join these industries.

Many industries are in need of these contestants or young people learning these skills to join the workforce. These professionals are the backbone of industries. That’s why we hope not only to join this competition but also to direct these talents to industries. That way, we can keep industrial development sustainable and further advance our skills.
