Japan-Taiwan Lawmakers Attend Taiwan National Day

REPORTER:
Japan’s largest association of Taiwan-friendly lawmakers was in Taipei to attend this weekend’s National Day celebrations.

The Japan-Taiwan Diet Members’ Consultative Council sent 27 cross-party members for the festivities. It’s the group’s first official visit to Taiwan since changing its name back in June this year, using the name “Taiwan” instead of “Republic of China.” The head of the association had this to say about President Lai Ching-te’s National Day remarks.

Furuya Keiji (JAPAN-TAIWAN DIET MEMBERS' CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL):
The goal of “building a city on a hill” means that we must earnestly build peace and security in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific through our own efforts. That phrase gave me a sense of extraordinary determination.

The group’s chair called for more cooperation between democratic countries to uphold stability in the Taiwan Strait.
