The co-founder of one of Taiwan’s most influential magazines and prominent economist Charles Kao has died aged 90.

 

Kao is best known for co-founding Commonwealth Magazine, a publication focused on finance, politics and humanities. Kao was born in Nanjing, China in 1936 and moved to Taiwan in 1949. Kao then moved to the United States in 1959 to teach at the University of Wisconsin. He later served as advisor to several branches of Taiwan’s government and won three Golden Tripods, the country's highest publishing industry award.

Prominent Taiwanese economist and co-founder of one of Taiwan’s most influential magazines Charles Kao has died at age 90.

 

Kao is best-known for co-founding Commonwealth Magazine in 1981, a publication focused on finance, politics, and humanities. Kao was born in Nanjing, China in 1936, and his family fled with the Nationalist army to Taiwan in 1949. Kao then moved to the United States in 1959, where he secured a teaching position at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He served as a consultant to Taiwan's economics ministry and the Cabinet.
