Taiwan Coast Guard Deploys Ships to Surveil China Vessels Near Philippines

The coast guard says it recently sent ships into an area where the Taiwanese and Philippine exclusive economic zones overlap to surveil Chinese vessels. Officials say the move is a routine deployment.

The coast guard has confirmed it’s sent patrol ships into overlapping waters with the Philippine’s exclusive economic zone to watch three Chinese ships in the area.

The coast guard said this was an ordinary maneuver, part of standard monitoring procedures of Chinese ships off of Taiwan. A Philippine coast guard vessel was already following the Chinese boats which officials said had remained in the waters for four days. Neither Taiwan or Philippine coast guard officials have commented on whether they were jointly monitoring the Chinese ships despite online speculation.
