Control Yuan Urges Compensation for Family of Democracy Activist Nylon Cheng
Taiwan’s government watchdog, the Control Yuan, has called for the government to provide compensation to the family of pro-democracy publisher Cheng Nan-jung, also known as Nylon Cheng. An investigation revealed that in 1989, authorities falsified police reports and pursued sedition charges against Cheng without legal basis. The watchdog found that this weaponization of police power directly led to Cheng's self-immolation inside his office during a police raid.

The government watchdog says justice is due for a key figure in Taiwan’s democratic movement who died during the country’s martial law period.
Cheng Nan-jung, also known as Nylon Cheng, was the editor-in-chief of an independent magazine that openly criticized the then authoritarian government. When police tried to arrest him for sedition in 1989, he set his office on fire and died in the blaze.
The Control Yuan, the government watchdog body, says the charges against him didn't have sufficient legal basis. It also says corruption and illegal use of law enforcement were crucial factors leading to Cheng’s death.
With these findings, the Control Yuan urges government compensation for Cheng's family.
