The Taiwan Research Institute has sharply raised its GDP growth forecast for 2026 to 9.33%, up from its 3.46% prediction at the end of last year, citing strong AI demand. The revised figure is close to the government's own forecast of 9.64% made in May.

Growth Forecast More Than Doubles

REPORTER:

A think tank has drastically raised its forecast for Taiwan's GDP growth this year, saying AI demand is more than enough to offset concerns over the Middle East.

The Taiwan Research Institute now says the country’s economy will grow 9.33 percent for 2026. That’s up from 3.46 percent at the end of last year and in line with the government's forecast of 9.64 percent, made in May. The think tank warned however that Taiwan's heavy reliance on tech means any headwinds there will have an outsized impact on the broader economy. It called for more balanced industrial growth.

Taiwan Growth Forecast Doubled

REPORTER:

A think tank on Tuesday more than doubled its forecast for Taiwan's GDP growth this year, saying AI demand is more than enough to offset concerns over the Middle East.

The Taiwan Research Institute revised its estimate up to 9.33 percent from 3.46 percent at the end of last year, closer to the government's earlier forecast of 9.64 percent. The TRI did caution, however, that Taiwan's heavy reliance on the tech sector means any headwinds there would have an outsized impact on the broader economy, and called for more balanced industrial growth.
