Vice President Hsiao Attends Democracy Conference in Italy

Taiwan’s Vice President Bi-Khim Hsiao and foreign minister Lin Chia-lung are visiting Italy.
Hsiao is there for The Ventotene Democracy and Freedom Conference, which brings together global leaders to counter authoritarianism and defend democracy. Her attendance was kept confidential until her arrival to prevent Beijing from trying to block the trip. A top European official welcomed the VP on Thursday.

No one can decide who can or cannot be hosted in Ventotene, and in particular, a regime like the Chinese regime cannot decide it. I was at the port to welcome the Vice President of Taiwan, who has just arrived in Ventotene, and I think this is a truly very important message.

A high-ranking European official has invited Taiwan Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao to a forum in Italy in defiance of Beijing.

Vice President Hsiao is attending the Ventotene Democracy and Freedom Conference with Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. Her visit was kept confidential to avoid interference from Beijing. European Parliament Vice President launched the conference in 2025 to discuss countering authoritarianism and defend democracy. Taiwan’s foreign ministry confirmed the visit and says more details will be released upon Hsiao’s return.
