The US State Department says it strongly supports Taiwan's participation in this year's Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in Palau, calling it a significant contributor to the region. The US says it strongly supports Taiwan’s participation in Pacific Islands Forum events, ahead of the bloc’s annual summit in Palau.

A State Department spokesperson told TaiwanPlus that Taiwan has been a development partner of the forum for over three decades and is a significant contributor across the Pacific.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is leading a delegation to Palau and is expected to meet forum members and other partners on the sidelines.

It comes after all non-member states, including the US and China, were excluded from last year’s forum in the Solomon Islands, reportedly linked to Beijing’s efforts to push Taiwan out.

Taiwan is currently participating the bloc’s annual summit in Palau as a development partner with a delegation led by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. The State Department says that Taiwan is a significant contributor to the Pacific region and has been a valuable PIF partner for over three decades. Deputy Secretary of State Landau is at the summit on the US’ behalf, though the state department has not said whether it will meet with the Taiwan delegation on the sidelines of the event.
