A group of Taiwanese artists have condemned the organizer for renaming the “Taiwan Pavilion” and removing “Taiwan” from the biennale’s official poster without their consent.
The artists’ Saturday statement said the 2026 Gwangju Biennale unilaterally renamed the “Taiwan Pavilion” as “NTMoFA,” the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, making it the only pavilion not presented under its original name.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture said it had urged the organizers to reverse the decision, while Taiwanese artists condemned the move as political censorship and a restriction on their right to self-identify.
