US lawmakers are urging Lithuania to continue its support for Taiwan. Four members of Congress's Taiwan caucus sent a letter Monday calling on Vilnius to maintain the relationship in its current status, after newly elected Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius suggested the country's past moves may have been "too brave." In 2021, Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a representative office under the name "Taiwanese," prompting Beijing to impose economic retaliation.

US lawmakers have called on Lithuania to resist China’s bullying and maintain its ties with Taiwan.
Four members of Congress’s Taiwan caucus issued a letter Monday, urging Lithuania to continue its support of Taiwan. In 2021, Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open its representative office using the name “Taiwanese” instead of “Taipei.” It also withdrew from a China-led European economic framework. These moves were condemned by China which imposed strong economic pressure on the country. Newly-elected Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius recently said the changes were maybe too brave. He has indicated he wants to repair relations with Beijing.

U.S. lawmakers have called on Lithuania to continue maintaining ties with Taiwan after the country's newly elected government took office.
Co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, including Mario Diaz-Balart, in a joint letter praised Lithuania for allowing Taiwan to open a de facto embassy in the country in 2021 and for demonstrating leadership among the Baltic states in leaving the China-Central and Eastern European Countries cooperation framework a year later. The letter comes as newly elected Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius takes a more pragmatic approach toward Beijing and reconsiders the naming of the Taiwanese Representative Office.
