Reviving Tradition: The Kavalan Community's Journey with Banana Fiber Weaving

In 1987, Xie Wanlai, known as the "Father of the Kavalan Community," began a movement to reclaim the identity of the Kavalan people. His efforts led to the rediscovery of the traditional craft of weaving with banana fibers. Today, at the XinShe Banana Fiber Workshop in Hualien, 84-year-old artisan Yan Yu-Ying, Xie Wanlai's widow, continues this legacy. Through their perseverance, the once-lost art of banana fiber weaving has been revived, showcasing the community's determination to preserve their cultural heritage.
