China’s new Ethnic Unity Law is drawing international criticism for extending Beijing’s vision of national unity beyond its own borders. While Chinese leaders say the law promotes social stability and ethnic cohesion, critics argue it strengthens legal tools for forced assimilation, ideological conformity and even transnational repression. The UN has called for the law’s repeal, while Taiwan and European lawmakers warn it could expand Beijing’s use of lawfare against ethnic minorities, overseas Chinese communities and even non-Chinese citizens abroad. Is this simply a domestic governance measure — or another step in China’s growing legal and political reach? In this episode, we examine what the Ethnic Unity Law does, why it matters and what it could mean for Taiwan, human rights and the international community. *Recorded on July 9, 2026 at 3pm Taiwan Standard Time Host: Wen-Ti Sung Producer: Chinyeh Chiang Videographer: Ko Gi Our guests: Laura Harth - Safeguard Defenders China in the World Director Simona Fantová - Project Sinopsis China Analyst
